The Union and the 100-Day Men from Ohio: Some of Whom Were Mustered in at Camp Chase

By Dennis Ranney of the SCV and Joanie Cool Jackson of the UDC

On April 21, 1864, Ohio Governor John Brough called for an historic meeting of War Governors from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin. The convention was held in Washington, DC. After meeting, the Governors notified President Lincoln that they could furnish him with 85,000 men for 100 days, without a dollar for bounty or a single draft, thus releasing a similar number of veterans for front line duty. Ohio pledged 30,000 troops; Indiana 20,000; Illinois 20,000; Iowa 10,000, and Wisconsin 5,000. The soldiers were to be uniformed, armed, equipped, transported, and paid by the Federal government. The first regiments left Ohio on May 5, 1864 with the last ready to go on May 16th. There were 41 regiments and one battalion, a total of 35,892 men. Thirty six of the regiments, enrolling 31,051 men, was sent into Virginia, Maryland, and to Washington, D.C.. One regiment was assigned to Camp Chase, one regiment and a battalion to Johnson’s Island, a regiment to Gallipolis, and two to Camp Dennison. One member of the Ohio National Guard, Joseph Olds Gregg of Company F, 133rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, N.G., was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1899. His citation reads: “Voluntarily returned to the breastworks, which his regiment had been forced to abandon, to notify three missing companies that the regiment was falling back; found the enemy already in the works, refused a demand to surrender, returning to his command under a concentrated fire, several bullets passing through his hat and clothing.”

These 100-Day Soldiers were also referred to as the Ohio National Guard (N.G.). The first regiment of the Ohio National Guard was the 130th Ohio Volunteer Infantry N.G. mustered in at Sandusky, OH.
